Anorexia Treatment Program

An anorexia treatment program is a series of therapies and medical treatments that help those suffering from the eating disorder anorexia nervosa recover from the illness.

Treatment programs can be located within a hospital system, as an outpatient clinic or in a residential facility. Many times programs are available within substance abuse treatment facilities, as clients with anorexia often suffer from a co-occurring substance abuse problem.

Finding a program that is right for you is just a phone call away at SubstanceAbuse.com. Dial our toll-free number at 1-800-763-1562, and let our trained specialists help you find the ideal anorexia treatment program that can address any co-occurring disorder.

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia treatment programs address the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, a psychological illness characterized by an obsession with weight, size and a strict restriction of calorie intake.

An estimated 0.5 percent to 3.7 percent of females and 0.1 percent to 0.2 percent of males suffer from the disorder and require the assistance of professionals at a treatment center.

Those entering an anorexia treatment program can be experiencing issues with low self-esteem, extremely low weight, fear of gaining weight and a refusal to eat or cease excessive exercise.

Programs for Anorexics

Many times, anorexics have been experiencing signs and symptoms of the disease for years, and often are in poor physical condition. Compound a body that is malnourished with alcoholism or drug abuse, and many clients entering anorexia treatment program are doing so within a hospital system.

In such severe cases, medical professionals in the anorexia treatment program first work to bring the client's body weight back up to a range appropriate for the client's age, gender and height. This part of the treatment program often involves getting the client back into a normal pattern of eating, or if unable to achieve eating on his or her own, intravenous feeding may be administered.

Once the treatment program has restored the client to a manageable weight, the psychological therapy, nutritional counseling and pharmacological therapy will begin.

Anorexia Treatment Programs

Sessions with a psychologist or psychiatrist allows the client to be educated about their disorder, and address symptoms along with underlying issues that lead to the need for an anorexia treatment program.

Nutritional counseling in an anorexia treatment program allows clients to meet with a dietician. Clients in this program learn how to keep track of eating, and how to repair their relationship with food in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Medications also may be administered during an anorexia treatment, often when the client is experiencing a co-occurring disorder, such as substance abuse or depression.
