Binge Drinking
Binge drinking is similar to the eating disorder, binge eating, in that the individual consumes a heavy amount of alcohol over "a short period of time." According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the official binge drinking definition is the following patterns of drinking:
- The consumption of five or more drinks in a row by men at least once over the course of two weeks
- The consumption of four or more drinks in a row by women at least once over the course of two weeks
If an individual experiences three or more of these episodes within a two weeks time frame, it is characterized as "heavy" binge drinking as well as an indicator of alcohol abuse symptoms.
Why Do People Turn to Binge Drinking?
People turn to alcohol binging for a number of reasons. Liquor stores, bars and alcoholic beverage companies make drinking seem attractive and fun for adults, and it's easy for high school students to get caught up in the pressures of a social scene. Other reasons why people binge drink include:
- They are curious about the allure of alcohol
- They believe the alcohol will make them feel better
- Teenagers want to feel as if they are adults
- Alcohol is often turned to as a stress reliever
Binge Drinking Risks
The most severe consequence of binge drinking is alcohol poisoning, which can be life-threatening. Other consequences of excessive drinking include impaired judgment, problems with physical and mental health or the development of alcoholism, otherwise known as alcohol addiction.
