Drug Abuse Prevention

A Successful Recovery Starts with Drug Abuse Prevention

Learning about drug abuse prevention is helpful for those prone to addiction as well as those who have recently been treated for addiction. Drug abuse prevention involves a plan and sticking to that plan. Below are some tips to help you stay clean.

Drug Abuse Prevention Tips

  • Set Goals. Setting goals for your day, your week or your month can help you stay focused. Working toward your goals is rewarding enough and achieving them is even more so. Make sure you set reasonable goals so you do not get discouraged.
  • See a Counselor. Therapy from a substance abuse counselor allows you to talk about your emotions and helps you learn to deal with them in a constructive manner. Simply communicating with an objective person or one trained in addiction treatment can help you realize that you do not need drugs to be happy or feel good.
  • Attend Support Groups. Support groups can help you stay on the track of success by reminding you that you are not alone. Knowing that others may be experiencing or have experienced the same thing you are going through can be helpful. They may share your fear, anxiety and desire. They may have a certain way of dealing with their emotions that could help you as well. Sometimes listening is just as important as talking.
  • Be Productive. When you get the urge to use, do something productive instead. Go to the gym, go shopping, watch a movie, work on a project - just do something else that makes you feel good.
  • Avoid Dangerous Situations and People. Certain situations and even old friends can make you want to abuse drugs again. Avoiding destructive places and people will help you stay focused and strong. Staying away from things that make you want to use drugs is a key component to drug abuse prevention.
  • Celebrate Your Victories. If you find yourself in a situation that makes you want to use drugs and you do not use, that is a huge accomplishment. Reward yourself! Buy yourself something you've wanted or spend the day at the spa. Do something good for yourself, because you deserve it.
  • Relax. Learn relaxation skills to reduce anxiety. Yoga and Pilates are excellent exercises to relax your mind and your body. This can help reduce mood swings as well as increase positive emotions and energy.
