Mental Health Counseling

As defined by the AMHCA, mental health counseling is the "clinical provision of professional counseling services including the application of principles of psychotherapy, human development, learning theory, group dynamics and the etiology of mental illness and dysfunctional behavior to individuals, couples, families and groups for the purpose of promoting optional mental health, dealing with normal problems of living and treating psychotherapy."

Counseling from Trained Professionals

Mental health counseling is administered by trained professionals. Mental health counseling services are rendered to families, individuals, groups and couples. Persons with marital problems, needing stress management, persons dealing with substance abuse, addictions, people with family problems, persons with suicidal urges, or persons with low self-esteem are in need of mental health counseling.

Most often these individuals or families have tried to self-treat but have come to recognize the merits of counseling. Many physical and behavioral issues are attributable to mental disorders. These conditions are disabling and make self-treatment difficult.

The mental health counselor's role is to obtain information through observations, interviews and testing. Counseling takes place in a variety of settings including clinics, hospitals, private offices and youth treatment facilities.

Mental disorders are debilitating. Unattended these disorders are dangerous. If you would like to confidentially discuss details about mental illness or mental health counseling, please call the 24/7 help line at 1-800-763-1562.

Mental Health Counseling Process

Mental health counseling begins with evaluations and risk assessments. Working with the patients, mental health counselors plan, develop and coordinate effective treatments.

Professionals in mental health counseling usually specialize in the many fields of mental illness. Once evaluated, the patient may be referred to the mental health counseling specialist best suited for the treatment. Proper diagnosis is extremely important for effective mental health counseling therapies.

Patients should understand that mental health counseling is often complex and necessitates additional consultation with social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, school counselors, family therapists and psychiatric nurses.

Diagnosing Mental Health

There are more than 200 classifications of mental illness. Similar symptoms and signs of these disorders are shared by many of these classifications. Medical history, testing and subsequent evaluations are central to obtaining a proper mental health counseling diagnosis. To complicate the process further, many of the symptoms of mental disorders are subject to interpretation.

The goal of mental health counseling is to keep patients out of hospitals and to help patients back to a healthy and productive life. Many of these patients cannot function in a family or community environment without therapy provided by the right counseling.
