Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Treatment

PTSD treatment is the type of professional help for people who have suffered a crisis or trauma they feel was beyond their ability to control. After the initial shock of the experience wears off, posttraumatic stress disorder treatment addresses the lingering effects. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is an anxiety disorder which develops after one or more traumatic events.

PTSD help is for the condition that remains after the crisis and prevents a return to normal daily living. People, who continue to feel as though they are in shock or who do not feel as though they are the same person as they were before the traumatic event, need the help that PTSD treatment offers.

Treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder is different than the treatment for shock. The difference between shock and PTSD is that the traumatic event is NOT dealt with but remains as a non-specific terror of the future.

Shock has physical symptoms; whereas, the treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder has many psychological symptoms:

  • recurring dreams
  • feelings of insecurity
  • flashbacks to the actual event
  • experiencing sights, aromas, sounds similar to the ones that occurred during the crisis; the similarities trigger a anxiety response or emotional state comparable to the one experienced during the actual crisis
  • sporadic physical shock-like reactions

Although it is never a good thing to feel this kind of upheaval, it is helpful to know that you are not alone; many survivors of accidents and serious events undergo post-traumatic stress disorder treatment to overcome post-traumatic stress disorder. After PTSD treatment, you will be better able to move beyond the shock and put the pieces of your life back on familiar ground. Sometimes, PTSD treatment is more successful if it is done along with other people who have shared a similar experience, although this is not always the preferred option. PTSD treatment centers are there to assist you with tackling this challenge to regain your former self.

PTSD Treatment Counselor Help

PTSD help follows an evaluation of the event that caused the trauma. A post-traumatic stress disorder treatment counselor will talk with you, either in person or over the phone, to determine how you would like to proceed. Sometimes, Posttraumatic stress disorder treatment counsellors will set-up an on-line meeting, if this is what you would prefer, for the initial consultation.

Some tragedies that can trigger PTSD and require PTSD treatment are:

  • Sexual assault and rape
  • Violent crimes, robbery in the home, muggings
  • Earthquakes or other natural disasters
  • Automobile, plane, train accidents
  • Kidnapping
  • Abuse
  • Surgery, especially in young children

PTSD treatment is a normal course of action for victims who have experienced the lingering effects of shock. PTSD is not an abnormal response to violence. Post traumatic stress disorder help is different from the treatment for shock. With shock, the victim gradually begins to deal with the events, process them, make sense of them and learn to face life again. PTSD treatment addresses the fear held by victims who feel they cannot take reasonable actions to prevent the same events from recurring. With post-traumatic stress disorder, victims continue to experience invasive feelings of threat and are unable to establish a reservoir of contentment and safety for themselves. This prevents victims from returning to normal daily living.
